The ready-made module
EU Withdrawal Button · Free
The withdrawal button as required by Directive (EU) 2023/2673: two steps, receipt in 24 EU languages, legal withdrawal register. Compatible with PrestaShop 1.7-9, updates included.
The digital withdrawal button is mandatory: the deadline has already passed
Since 19 June 2026, Directive (EU) 2023/2673 has applied across the European Union. It amends the Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU by introducing a new Article 11a, and the substance is simple: if you sell online to consumers, your store must provide a digital "withdrawal function", a button or link that is always visible and lets the customer exercise their right of withdrawal directly through the online interface, without hunting for an email address or a PDF form buried in your terms and conditions.
In Italy the rule has been transposed into Article 54-bis of the Consumer Code, and every Member State has its own transposition of the same requirement. This is not a recommendation or a best practice: it is a legal obligation that is already in force. If your PrestaShop store does not yet expose this function, it has been formally non compliant for weeks. This guide covers what the rule actually requires, who is affected, what you risk and the fastest way to bring PrestaShop into line.
What the rule requires in practice
Article 11a of Directive 2011/83/EU, introduced by Directive (EU) 2023/2673, sets out very specific requirements for distance contracts that can be concluded through an online interface. In short:
- A digital withdrawal function. The consumer must be able to declare withdrawal through a dedicated function of the online interface, not only by email or paper form.
- A clear label. The function must be labelled "withdraw from contract here" or with equivalent, unambiguous wording. No vague "after sales support" links.
- Continuous visibility. The function must be prominently displayed and easily accessible throughout the withdrawal period, which is 14 days in the standard case.
- A guided two step flow. The consumer fills in the withdrawal statement with their details and order information, reaches a summary screen, and submits the statement with an explicit confirmation. The summary step exists to prevent accidental withdrawals.
- A receipt on a durable medium. The trader must send, without undue delay, an acknowledgement of receipt on a durable medium, typically by email, stating the date and time of the declaration. That timestamp is what counts when deadlines are disputed.
Once withdrawal has been declared through the button, the ordinary rules apply: the consumer must be refunded within 14 days of the withdrawal communication.
Who is covered and who is not
The obligation applies to B2C distance contracts that can be concluded through an online interface. Translated for a PrestaShop merchant:
- You are covered if you sell online to EU consumers goods or services for which a right of withdrawal exists. That is the vast majority of stores.
- You are not affected if you sell exclusively to other businesses (pure B2B) or if your contracts are not concluded online.
- The middle case: if part of your catalogue falls under the exceptions to the right of withdrawal already provided by Directive 2011/83/EU (custom made goods and other exempt categories), the exemption applies to those products, not to your whole store. Be careful though: assessing whether a withdrawal is well founded is something you do after the declaration. Blocking the declaration itself based on product category is a risky design choice.
What you risk if you do not comply
In Italy, non compliance exposes you to the penalties provided by the Consumer Code, whose framework also covers unfair commercial practices. Obstructing the exercise of the right of withdrawal, or failing to provide the function now required by Article 54-bis, is exactly the kind of conduct the authority can pursue. Beyond fines there are practical consequences: disputes over deadlines (without a receipt carrying date and time, the customer's word is as good as yours), chargebacks, negative reviews and litigation that costs far more than the technical fix.
There is also a visibility factor: the button must sit in a prominent position on the site, so its absence can be verified by anyone in seconds, competitors and consumer associations included.
How to bring PrestaShop into compliance
No version of PrestaShop ships with a withdrawal function that meets Article 11a out of the box. You have two options.
Manual implementation
You can have the function built into your theme: a footer link, a declaration form, a summary page with confirmation, a timestamped email, a request log and order status handling. It is feasible, but you must cover every requirement (labelling, continuous visibility, the two step flow, the durable receipt), maintain it through every theme and platform update, and handle translations if you sell in several EU countries. Development and maintenance costs quickly exceed the price of a ready made module.
A dedicated module
A compliant module installs the function in minutes, keeps it aligned with the platform, and adds the management layer (log, deadlines, documentary evidence) that manual builds almost always neglect.
| Article 11a requirement | Manual build | With the module |
|---|---|---|
| Always visible link with compliant label | Custom theme work | Included (footer, account, order page) |
| Flow with summary and explicit confirmation | Custom development | Included |
| Durable receipt with date and time | Custom development | Included, in 24 EU languages |
| Evidence and refund deadline tracking | Almost never built | Log with countdown and audit trail |
The EU Withdrawal Button module
For PrestaShop we developed EU Withdrawal Button (free), which implements the flow required by Directive (EU) 2023/2673 end to end:
- A withdrawal link that is always visible in the footer, the customer account and the order detail page, with a compliant label.
- A two step flow: declaration, summary screen and submission with explicit confirmation.
- A receipt on a durable medium sent by email with date and time, available in 24 EU languages.
- A back office register with a 14 day refund countdown and a full audit trail for every request.
- Return label PDF generation to attach to the case file.
- A dedicated "Withdrawal requested" order status to integrate withdrawals into your operational workflow.
- Exclusion handling for exempt categories or products: the customer is warned, but the declaration is never blocked, in line with the logic of the rule.
- Compatibility from PrestaShop 1.7 through PrestaShop 9.
If you also need to comply with GPSR, accessibility and cookie rules, multi-module carts pay off: the volume discount applies automatically, 10% above 150 € and 15% above 250 € (minimum 2 products). Full documentation is in the module guide.
Frequently asked questions
Since when is the digital withdrawal button mandatory?
Since 19 June 2026. Directive (EU) 2023/2673 amends Directive 2011/83/EU with the new Article 11a; in Italy it is transposed in Article 54-bis of the Consumer Code. The obligation is already in force.
How must the button be labelled?
With the wording "withdraw from contract here" or an equivalent, unambiguous formulation. It must be prominently displayed and accessible throughout the withdrawal period, which is 14 days in the standard case.
Is a link to a generic contact form enough?
No. The rule requires a specific flow: the consumer fills in the statement, sees a summary screen and submits with explicit confirmation; you then send, without undue delay, a receipt on a durable medium stating date and time.
My store also sells products excluded from withdrawal: how do I handle them?
Exemptions apply to individual products, not to the store. EU Withdrawal Button lets you configure exclusions per category or product: the customer sees a warning, but the declaration is never blocked, and the assessment remains yours.
What do I risk if I do not comply?
The penalties provided by the Consumer Code, whose framework also covers unfair commercial practices, plus deadline disputes, chargebacks and litigation that are hard to defend without a timestamped receipt.
Which PrestaShop versions does the module support?
EU Withdrawal Button is compatible from PrestaShop 1.7 through PrestaShop 9, with email receipts in 24 EU languages.
