What changes from 27 September 2026 for online sellers

From 27 September 2026 the Member States apply the rules transposing Directive (EU) 2024/825, which amends Directive 2011/83/EU on consumer rights. The same date applies to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960, which sets the design and content of two new information tools, with one format across the Union: the harmonised notice on the legal guarantee of conformity and the harmonised label, called GARAN, for the commercial guarantee of durability.

The stated aim of the Regulation is to make consumers more aware of their rights and to stimulate both demand for and supply of more durable goods. The two guarantees are independent, but the notice and the label are designed to complement each other and refer to each other, so that consumers can see the difference between the two.

This page summarises the practical points for an online shop. It is orientation based on the official texts, not legal advice: the obligations come from the national law transposing the directive, and for your own case it is worth asking your adviser.

The notice on the legal guarantee of conformity

Directive 2011/83/EU (Article 5(1)(e) and Article 6(1)(l)) requires the trader to remind the consumer of the existence of the legal guarantee of conformity for goods, before the consumer is bound by a contract or any corresponding offer. The reminder must contain the main elements of the guarantee, including its minimum duration of two years and a general reference to the possibility that the duration may be longer under national law. It must be given in a prominent manner, using the harmonised notice provided for in Article 22a.

According to the Regulation, the notice also reminds consumers of the remedies available if goods are not in conformity and explains that sellers are liable to provide them under certain conditions. It gives practical information on the steps to take, says where to find more information and states that sellers and producers may offer additional commercial guarantees, including a commercial guarantee of durability. The QR code leads to the section on the legal guarantee of conformity of the Your Europe portal, in the chosen language.

Rules of use

  • No element is edited. The Regulation states that none of the elements of the notice can be edited. The guidelines add: do not change colours, spacing, typography or the QR code, do not crop or stretch the notice, and do not add elements, icons or text.
  • Official files, in colour. You use the files published by the Commission in all the official EU languages, in the version that fits the medium: for the web, the RGB colour one.
  • Complete and legible. Online the full notice is shown, legible at default display size, and a clickable link to the same destination as the QR code must always be available.

The GARAN label for the commercial guarantee of durability

The commercial guarantee of durability is a commitment of the producer to the consumer: the good will maintain its required functions and performance through normal use during a certain period. The producer decides freely whether to offer it. The GARAN label is there to signal it to the consumer, and only when three conditions are met together:

  • the guarantee is offered by the producer at no additional cost;
  • it covers the entire good, not just a component;
  • it lasts for more than two years.

When these conditions are met and the producer makes the information available to the seller, the seller must inform the consumer of the existence and duration of the guarantee, reminding them that they also benefit from the legal guarantee of conformity. This must be done in a prominent manner, using the harmonised label (Directive 2011/83/EU, Article 5(1)(ea) and Article 6(1)(la)). According to the Commission guidelines the seller should not actively seek this information from the producer, for example by searching on product-specific websites.

How it is made and what can be edited

The label has a language-neutral design: the title "GARAN", a tick-mark symbol, a calendar symbol for the duration, a shield-shaped visual reminder of the legal guarantee, a QR code to the Your Europe portal and, at the bottom, the phrase "Producer guarantee in years" in all the official EU languages. There are three fields to fill in:

  • XX: the duration in years. Whole numbers (3, 5, 11 and so on); half years are also allowed, written with a comma (2,5 or 4,5). Other decimals, such as 4,1, are not allowed.
  • Brand/Trademark: the name of the producer offering the guarantee.
  • Model identifier: the identifier of the model the guarantee refers to.

Everything else is fixed, including the font (Inter, also in the editable fields). The guidelines ask you not to use the label for other types of commercial guarantee and, in a banner showing several products, not to suggest that all are covered when they are not.

Where to show them online

The notice

The Regulation (recital 3) specifies that the reminder must be given before the consumer is bound by the contract. The guidelines describe it as a general reminder on the seller's website and give three examples, warning that they are not exhaustive: the product catalogue page, the header of the site and the check-out page. In all three cases a sentence is added, for example "Your legal guarantee rights", which shows the full notice on the first mouse click or roll-over. The notice should also be included in the order confirmation email.

The GARAN label

  • On the product page, associated with the product it refers to: for example as part of the product image, as an image in the gallery, in the description or as the nested label.
  • At check-out, directly before the customer places the order, according to the guidelines.
  • In the order confirmation email.
  • Legible and reachable: legible at default display size, in colour, with a clickable link to the same destination as the QR code always available. If it appears on a product picture, the image should open in a larger, zoomable view.

The nested version

For distance contracts concluded through an online interface the Regulation allows a compact version of the label, useful where space is tight. The rule is precise: if you use it, the label must appear in its entirety on the first mouse click, mouse roll-over or tactile screen expansion. The guidelines add that the compact version should always be accompanied by accessible text and a link, or a mouseover effect, leading to the full label.

Who must do it

  • The seller, that is the trader selling goods to consumers. Shows the notice at shop level, online and in physical shops, and shows the GARAN label for the goods for which the producer offers the durability guarantee and has made the information available. If you run an online shop it is up to you, even when someone else makes the products.
  • The producer. Decides freely whether to offer the commercial guarantee of durability. If it does, it must make this known to the seller, describe the terms in the commercial guarantee statement and may place the label on the good or on its packaging itself.
  • Anyone who also sells in a physical shop. There the notice is printed at A4 size at least and the printed label is at least 95 x 100 mm.

The rules concern goods sold to consumers. How the law of your country transposed them is something to check with your adviser.

Checklist for an online shop

  1. The full notice can be reached in a prominent way and in the customer's language, for example from a sentence on the product page and at check-out that opens it on the first click.
  2. The clickable link to the Your Europe page is always available.
  3. The images are the official colour files, without crops, filters or additions.
  4. The GARAN label appears only on products with a producer guarantee that meets the three requirements (no additional cost, entire good, more than two years), with the exact duration, producer and model.
  5. The label is visible on the product page and directly before the order.
  6. Notice and labels are also in the confirmation email.

How the EU Legal Guarantee Notice & GARAN Label module does it

The PrestaShop module shows the notice and the label where you choose, with the official files of the European Commission in the 24 languages of the Union:

  • The official notice in the customer's language, with the accessible text version, on the product page, in the cart and in the payment step (also directly above the order button), in the footer and in the header, on a dedicated page and in the order confirmation email with the PDF attached.
  • The GARAN label drawn from the official template, with the prescribed font, per product and per combination: duration, producer and model identifier. Manufacturer templates and CSV import and export for large catalogues.
  • The full label, the nested version or a customisable card around the official strip; the official files are not changed. The position of the label and of the notice on the product page is chosen separately.
  • A record of every order with what the customer was shown, the option not to show them to business customers and a scanner for product texts.
  • Compatible with PrestaShop 1.6.1 to 9, multistore.

The module shows the official files where you decide: the positions you use and the GARAN data you enter remain the seller's responsibility. See the module page or read the installation and setup guide.

Official sources

As the document itself states, the Commission guidelines set out the preliminary views of the Commission services and do not state an official position: only the Court of Justice of the European Union can authoritatively interpret EU law.

Frequently asked questions

From when do the legal guarantee notice and the GARAN label apply?

From 27 September 2026: it is the date from which the Member States apply the rules transposing Directive (EU) 2024/825 and from which Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 applies.

Is the GARAN label mandatory for every product?

No. Offering the commercial guarantee of durability is a voluntary choice of the producer. The seller must show the label when the producer offers it at no additional cost, for the entire good and for more than two years, and has made the information available.

Can I edit the text or the colours of the notice?

No. No element of the notice can be edited. On the label only three fields can be filled in: the duration in years, the producer name and the model identifier.

Is a link in the footer enough?

The rule is to show the notice in a prominent manner. The guidelines give examples such as a sentence on the product page, in the header and at check-out that opens the full notice on the first mouse click or roll-over. A link nobody notices is unlikely to match that description: assess your case with your adviser.

What is the nested version of the label?

It is the compact version of the label, allowed only for distance contracts concluded through an online interface. It must open the full label on the first mouse click, mouse roll-over or tactile screen expansion.

Can I state 3,5 years of guarantee?

Yes. Whole numbers and half years written with a comma, such as 2,5 or 4,5, are allowed. Other decimals, such as 4,1, are not.

Does the module make my shop compliant?

No module can guarantee that on its own. EU Legal Guarantee Notice & GARAN Label shows the official files where you choose and helps you manage the data, but the positions you use and the GARAN data you enter remain the seller's responsibility.
